Hip hop dancing is a popular form of artistic expression in Medellin, Colombia.

Here is some basic information about hip hop, to get you started:

  • Hip hop dancing is generally done without a partner and includes a variety of freestyle movements. These movements can be combined to create choreographies that are performed by more than one dancer simultaneously. Learning to dance hip hop is helpful for understanding rhythm, dissocation, body isolations, timing, and artistic expression.

  • Dance forms associated with hip hop include hip hop (also known as hip hop freestyle or new style), locking (freezing from a movement, locking in a certain position, holding that position, and then continuing as before), popping (tensing and releasing of muscles to the rhythm/beats of music), and breaking (also known as breakdance or breakdancing).
