What do I need to do to begin taking Private Classes, in person and/or online?

To begin taking Private Classes in person and/or online (via Google Meet or Zoom), complete the steps at following link: www.dancefree.com.co/en/private-classes

What is the average Private Class length?

You are welcome to take classes of 1 hour, 1.5 hours, 2 hours, etc., subject to availability. The majority of our clients prefer to take 2 hours per class, we have clients who take 1 to 6 or more hours of classes daily, and you may take classes 1 or more times daily. You may take up to 2 hours per day per available instructor. The minimum Private Class length is 1 hour.

How many instructors do you recommend?

Below are some considerations that may be helpful when choosing the number of instructors:

  • One student with one instructor: For dance and language classes, this is the option preferred by most students. Most students prefer having their own instructor because every student is different, learns differently and at a different pace, and having your own instructor gives you better attention, instruction, and opportunity to practice/dance with your instructor and ask questions for your own understanding, improvement, and development.

  • One student with two instructors: For dance classes, this option is for students who would like to learn faster and receive the most personal attention. Having two instructors gives you the opportunity to learn faster, see how moves are done by two professionals, and receive instruction, tips and feedback from the leader and follower simultaneously.

  • Couples: For dance and language classes, couples usually find it helpful to take Private Classes together and separately with one or two instructors.

  • Groups: When groups of students share one or more instructors, it is generally as an introduction, just for fun and/or to share an experience with a significant other, friends, family or colleagues, such as for an introduction to one or more dance rhythms (e.g., to learn initial steps, rhythm, etc.) or as an introduction to a language (e.g., Spanish).

Although having your own instructor(s) is the most popular and recommended option for students who would like to have the best learning experience, we offer Private Classes for any number of students and instructors and we will always do our best to offer you the best experience.

Do I need to have experience to take Private Classes?

No, you do not need to have experience. We offer Private Classes for all levels, from new to expert.

Can I take a test class?

Yes. You may purchase the number of hours you would like to take for the test class as a down payment. If you do not purchase any additional hours on the calendar day of your test class or earlier, you're already paid for in full. If you do, we will apply your down payment toward the package you choose to purchase and the hours you already took as a test class will be deducted from the package.

Please note that each purchase you make after the calendar day of your test class will qualify for our package discounts for future purchases.

Unfortunately, we are not permitted to apply any purchase or payment made after the calendar day of your test class toward any discount and/or combine any purchase or payment made after the calendar day of your test class with other purchases and/or packages.

Do you offer Private Classes online?

Yes. We offer online classes via Google Meet and Zoom 7 days a week, subject to availability. We offer online language classes 7 days a week and online dance classes on weekdays only, Monday through Friday.

We are currently offering online dance classes on weekdays only because online dance classes have more technical complexity. For online dance classes, we use a dedicated, additional staff member to manage the audio, video and virtual platforms, although we do not charge you for this person who is out of the camera view. And, we use up to 3 computers, a microphone, a camera, redundant Internet providers and more for the purpose of offering you the best audio/video experience possible.

Do you offer Private Classes for children?

Yes. We currently offer Private Classes for adults (18 years of age and older) and children 5 years of age and older.

Other info that may be helpful:

  • We recommend that children who take dance classes are open to and want to take dance classes.
  • For children who haven't yet taken dance classes and/or are taking dance classes with a new instructor, we recommend beginning with a shorter class length, such as one hour, and before scheduling more classes, asking your child if she or he enjoyed the experience and would like to learn more.
  • Children should be able to pay attention, follow directions and handle mild, constructive feedback.
  • Not all of our instructors teach children. After you have purchased Private Class hours for your child, we will help you select instructors who have experience with and enjoy teaching children.
Do you accept walk-ins for Private Classes?

We will do our best to make same-day availability possible as soon as you have hours purchased. Private Classes are generally paid for and scheduled at least one day in advance.

To begin taking Private Classes in person and/or online (via Google Meet or Zoom), complete the steps at the following link: www.dancefree.com.co/en/private-classes

What are Private Classes?

Private Classes are for personal instruction (e.g., one student with one or two instructors, two students/a couple with one or two instructors). Most students purchase Private Class hours for one student with one instructor. Private Classes for one student with one instructor are one-on-one instruction. You have your own instructor who teaches you only. For Private Dance Classes (e.g., Salsa, Bachata, Tango), your instructor teaches you and dances with you.

More Info

Can I take dance and language classes with the same package?

Yes. You may change instructors, rhythms, and languages whenever you’d like.

Can I take dance classes in more than one rhythm/genre with the same package (e.g., Salsa, Bachata, and Tango)?

Yes. You may change instructors, rhythms, and languages whenever you’d like.

How many hours of Private Classes should I take to learn to dance comfortably in a bar or other social setting?

As a general guideline (every client has different needs and ability to learn)...

3 hours: understanding of basics and introduction to rhythm, counts, etc.

10 hours: comfort with basics and initial partner moves and more understanding of rhythm, counts, etc.

20 hours: improving confidence with basics and dancing with partner

40 hours: rising confidence, having more fun, wanting to dance and practice more

80 hours: now feeling like getting better than others, comfort dancing with most partners

Lifestyle (taking classes regularly): becomes part of your life and enjoyment, social activity and way to stay fit and healthy, learning and enjoying more combinations with partner, getting smoother with transitions, hearing rhythm and changes in music better, etc.

Should I take Private Classes with a male instructor, a female instructor, or a combination of the two?

In general, students who learn the best are those who take classes with both a male and female instructor. Below are some general guidelines:

  • If you would like to learn to be a leader, we recommend taking at least one third of your classes with a male instructor. This is because male instructors generally have more experience as leaders.
  • If you would like to learn to be a follower, we recommend taking at least one third of your classes with a female instructor. This is because female instructors generally have more experience as followers.
  • Because male instructors spend the majority of their time as leaders, they can often be extremely helpful teaching you how they do what they do, including the breakdown of individual dance moves, how to give subtle indications to the follower so that the follower can more easily understand you, etc.
  • There are now female instructors who are learning to be great leaders, and there are now male instructors who are learning to be great followers.
  • An excellent instructor can be both a leader and a follower. For example, if an instructor is teaching you to be a leader, the instructor should then be able to switch roles so you can practice being a leader. If an instructor is teaching you to be a follower, the instructor should then be able to switch roles so you can practice being a follower.
Is it necessary to have the same number of men and women in Private Dance Classes?

No. If you purchase Private Classes for a group of friends, family, colleagues, etc., we will adapt the Private Class to the experience, preferences and goals of your group. We can focus on rhythm, basics, and dancing with a partner, we can take turns leading and following, we can divide the class into smaller groups, etc. If there are more men or women, that is okay. We will always do our best to offer you the best experience with the students and instructor(s) that you have.

Where can I see videos of your instructors dancing?

We do not currently provide videos of our instructors. You may view the videos that we have available on our Instagram page at www.instagram.com/dancefreeco, on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dancefreeco/videos, and on our YouTube page at www.youtube.com/dancefreevideo.

What is the difference between a larged, shared space and a private space?

For Private Classes, you have your own private instructor(s), for you only. We offer Private Classes in large, shared spaces and in private spaces (e.g., a private salon or on a separate, mezzanine level).

Most people are happy with our large, shared spaces because they are large, open spaces with ample mirrors. As much as possible, we separate the music/genres between shared spaces, such as separate shared spaces for Salsa and Bachata.

When it is not possible to separate the music/genres in our shared spaces, our instructors take turns with the music, and this generally works well for everyone. When we are teaching you, it is generally most effective when part of the time is without music, to give you more detailed instruction and help you at a slower pace, and part of the time is with music, to practice one or more concepts with you, give you pointers and help as we dance, and/or for repetition/retention (practicing what you have already learned as much as possible).

For those who prefer a private space (e.g., a private salon or on a separate, mezzanine level), we also offer the option of a private space for an additional charge per hour, subject to availability. The additional charge for a private space is currently 20.000 Colombian Pesos per hour when paid in cash.

What type of shoes and clothing should I wear for dance classes?

Recommended shoes for dance classes

We recommend wearing footwear that is pain-free, is comfortable for exercise, is easy to move in, and doesn't restrict your ankles. Light trainers (the equivalent of Nike Free) are a great option. Comfortable sneakers, lightweight running shoes and flats are also commonly worn by students. We do not recommend wearing sandals, open toe shoes, boots, shoes with soles that are too thin, bulky shoes, or anything that restricts your ankles.

For your safety, bare feet and socks only are not permitted in our facilities. Shoes may be removed only during permitted activities that do not involve contact with the floor (e.g., during stretching classes while on an exercise mat). Shoes should be put on immediately after completing the permitted activity and at all times while in contact with the floor. If shoes are removed during a permitted activity, the feet should be completely covered at all times with socks or another type of hosiery.

Recommended clothing for dance classes

We recommend clothing that has a comfortable, loose fit (so that you can move freely) and that is resistant to sweat/moisture (dance is exercise, so you may sweat a bit). Comfortable clothing, casual or light athletic, is commonly worn by students.

For pants, comfortable jeans or any other pants that enable you to move freely, are commonly worn by students. For your safety, do not wear pants that are too long (pants should not restrict the movement of your feet).

For tops, we recommend something that is comfortable and breathable. If you sweat a lot, you may want to consider something that is sleeveless and resistant to sweat/moisture (see our tips for sweating below).

For women, we recommend a supportive, well-fitted, comfortable sports bra below your top.

Sweating

Dance is a form of exercise, so you may sweat a bit. If it's likely you will sweat, please consider the following suggestions:

  • Wear a shirt and/or other clothing that is designed to repel, not absorb sweat (e.g., Dri-FIT clothing). Dri-FIT technology uses polyester fabric designed to help keep you dry. It basically repels sweat, while clothing made of purely cotton and other matierals may absorb sweat and become wet and unpleasant during fitness activity.
  • Bring a small, freshly cleaned personal hand towel to dry your forehead, neck and other parts of your body that may come into contact with others. A used hand towel should be stored on your body (e.g., some people hang a hand towel from their belt or similar) or in a sweat resistant bag inside your personal bag (for already used, sweaty clothing).
  • Bring a change of shirt and/or other clothing as necessary for classes, especially classes longer than one hour. This may be especially helpful if you are getting acclimated to warmer and/or humid weather and/or sweat a lot.
  • If you change your shirt and/or other clothing during or between classes, please have a sweat resistant bag (e.g., plastic bag) on hand to put your sweaty clothing in, place your sweaty clothing in your plastic bag, and store your plastic bag in your personal bag.

Personal hygiene

To make your stay more comfortable for everyone, please make sure all clothing is freshly washed and being worn for the first time after washing. For more helpful personal hygiene tips, www.dancefree.com.co/diario/personal-hygiene-tips-for-a-healthy-environment.

Where can I buy dance shoes?

We offer the D'Raso Dance Sneaker, which is the dance sneaker most often used by our instructors. It is a high quality, durable, flexible, unisex dance sneaker that can be used for most dance rhythms. If we do not have your size in stock, we can generally get it for you within 3-5 business days.

Also, below is a list of entities that make and/or sell dance shoes in Medellín, Colombia, including contact info, etc., should it be helpful... www.dancefree.com.co/diario/zapatos-de-baile-en-medellin

Can I combine dance and language instruction in the same class?

No. Because dance and languages require different types of instruction and spaces (for the purpose of offering you the best possible learning experience for each type of instruction), they are scheduled as separate private appointments.

Dance and language classes may be scheduled back to back (as consecutive private appointments, one after the other), minimum one hour for each dance class and minimim one hour for each language class. You may take unlimited classes during the same calendar day, up to 2 hours per day per available instructor.

Other helpful info:

  • When taking in-person dance and language classes in the same calendar day, when the dance class(es) begin before the language class(es), we recommend taking a break of minimum 15 minutes between classes for personal hygiene to give yourself the appropriate time to cool down, dry off, change clothing and/or apply deodorant as necessary, not arrive for a language class while sweating, etc.
  • Because our in-person dance and language classes are generally offered in separate spaces (for the purpose of offering you the best possible learning experience for each type of instruction), we recommend allowing minimum 15 minutes between dance and language classes to walk from one space to another, although the time needed to get from one space to another may be a lot shorter.
Do you provide at-home service?

We do not currently provide at-home service.

We are currently offering Private Classes (dance and languages) 7 days a week, subject to availability, in person at DANCEFREE, Calle 10A #40-27, El Poblado, Medellín, Colombia, following our biosecurity guidelines (www.dancefree.com.co/biosecurity) and online via Zoom and Google Meet.

We look forward to making at-home service available to better serve you. Please be patient as we work on the necessary details (e.g., safety, transportation, additional time for our instructors to travel to and from each location).

How much experience do your dance instructors have?

We do not know of any dance academy that has more teaching experience than us.

We have instructors who teach more than 1,500 Private Dance Class hours per calendar year.

For Salsa, about one-third of DANCEFREE's Medellín instructors are current national and/or world dance champions with as much patience and kindness as talent.

We currently offer Salsa, Bachata, Tango, Kizomba, Merengue, Reggaetón, Hip Hop, Dancehall, Cha Cha, Fox, Bolero, Porro, Cumbia, Shines, Styling, and more.

Where can I go out social dancing to practice what I am learning in my Private Classes?

DANCEFREE is one of the most popular social dancing venues in the country of Colombia with 2 separate dancing environments:

  1. Salsa (100% Salsa)
  2. Bachata (80% Bachata, 20% Kizomba/Zouk; percentages may vary depending on participation)

To view our group activities, videos, photos and more, you may:

You may just show up for our group activities (e.g., Dance Classes, Language Exchanges, Bar, Socials). No reservation needed. Adults only. Bring ID.

Also, below is a list of Medellín Salsa bars, including contact info, etc., should it be helpful. Please note that certain bars may be temporarily or permanently closed due to the worldwide health issue. www.dancefree.com.co/diario/mejores-bares-de-salsa-medellin

We do not currently have a list of Medellín bars or socials for other rhythms (e.g., Bachata, Kizomba).

Can I join a Private Class with other students?

You may take Private Classes alone or with one or more other students. If you would like to take Private Classes with one or more other students, you are responsible for finding the other student(s) and making payment for the number of students, instructors and hours you would like to schedule the classes for. Unfortunately, we do not provide the service of finding or matching students to take Private Classes together.

If you would like to take Private Classes with one or more other students, the following information may be helpful:

  • Private Class prices are based on the number of students, instructors and hours.
  • The hours within the package purchased may only be used by the person(s) the hours were originally purchased for.
Can I pay for one of your instructors to go out social dancing with me?

For your and our safety, we do not currently offer the service of accompaniment (taking clients out to and/or accompanying clients for visits to bars, clubs, socials, etc.).

May I videotape parts of my Private Class(es)?

With regard to videotaping/filming, such as for remembering key points of what you have learned, creating content for your social network page(s), etc., the answer is yes, with the following conditions:

  • We do not allow continuous filming of a Private Class or filming of other students' Private Classes.

  • We do not allow hidden cameras and/or filming people who are not aware that they are being filmed.

  • With the permission of your instructor, you may film parts of your Private Class. Each time that you would like to film, ask your instructor if it okay to begin filming and only begin filming if he or she says yes.

  • You may film the exterior and interior of DANCEFREE, excluding other Private Classes.

  • If you bring someone else to film for you, the other person will count as an additional student in your Private Class even if she or he is filming only. This is because every person requires space, attention, and the use of our facilities.

  • At any time, we may prohibit you from filming, such as for security, behavior that makes others' uncomfortable, or for any other reason at our sole discretion.
