Escuelas y Academias de Salsa en Charlotte, Carolina del Norte, Estados Unidos

Estados Unidos tiene en su origen, en sus rasgos distintivos, y en la conformación de su nación, el hecho de ser un país de inmigrantes. En la colonización fueron principalmente ingleses, españoles, franceses, y los esclavos africanos que introdujeron los tres primeros. Pero en los diferentes procesos migratorios de los siglos XVIII al XX, la pluralidad de nacionalidades no tuvo límite y se diversificó profundamente debido entre otras razones a la promesa del sueño americano. El diálogo y la apertura al mundo modificaron diferentes aspectos de la vida estadounidense, dando origen a amalgamas y sincretismos que tuvieron su mayor expresión en el plano de la cultura, y de forma sobresaliente en la música. La música popular estadounidense, dentro de las que se incluyen al Country, al Rock and Roll y al Jazz, habrían sido otra cosa de no ser por el Blues y otros géneros musicales nacidos de las entrañas de las plantaciones de algodón, tabaco y caña del sur de EE.UU., donde la mano de obra era esencialmente negra.

Junto a otras corrientes de población mundial que buscaban mejor suerte en norteamérica, arribaron también las diversidades “del Caribe que se puede ver, tocar, oler, oír, gustar; el Caribe de los sentidos, de los sentimientos y los presentimientos”, como bien lo enunciara Arturo Benítez en “La isla que se repite”. Todo ese fluir de América, África y Europa, mediado por relaciones de dominación, pero también por otras más amplias y nobles de filiación, hizo aflorar por ejemplo el Blues y el Jazz, y posteriormente en los años 40’s del siglo XX entre música afrocubana y afroamericana engendrarían el Latin Jazz, uno de los precursores de la Salsa. Frank Grillo “Machito”, Mario Bauzá, Arsenio Rodríguez y el mismo Benny Moré, hacen parte de ese estelar grupo de portadores y creadores, sin los cuales, en Nueva York, o mejor en el barrio, en el Spanish Harlem, habría podido generarse tal movimiento cultural y popular.

Entre los últimos años de la década de los 60’s y mediados de los 70’s del siglo XX, surge la Salsa como fenómeno social, cultural, disidente, y disruptivo de los jóvenes y la migración latina. En su origen, y como parte de sus condimentos esenciales, están las referencias a un pasado campesino, a las faenas en los campos de labor del Caribe, a las angustias del diario vivir, pero sobre todo al ingenio del caribeño por sobreponerse a esas experiencias rurales de realidades y contrastes maravillosamente trágicos. Si en su raíz rememoraba un pasado guajiro (campesino), en el tiempo en que se consolida (finales de los años 60’s), siente el desarraigo de esos imaginarios extraviados y deslocalizados, pero resignificados a través de la lucha y la sobrevivencia en la ciudad. Esa condición de pugna y búsqueda de nuevas representaciones se hacía expresa en la creación y composición musical que, por ejemplo, transitaba de “El carretero” del cienfueguero Guillermo Portabales a “La calle está durísima” del neoyorquino Joe Cuba. Era la construcción de una identidad cuyos referentes eran los vaivenes del camino, la vereda, la carreta, el cañaveral o la plantación, que se transformaban en los hechos de la calle, la avenida, la esquina y el barrio, como un movimiento cultural que surgía en la ciudad y adquiría el carácter de urbano. Ese flujo de armonía, melodía, ritmo y cuerpo afroantillano y afrolatino, retomaría un viaje de ida y vuelta a la Latinoamérica de sus afinidades originarias, confirmando así que “La música, como la poesía, como el Caribe y sus islas pueden llamarse, en palabras de André Breton, ‘vasos comunicantes’. Para mí serán siempre versos comunicantes”, según lo escribiera el cubano Guillermo Cabrera Infante en el ensayo “Salsa para una ensalada”.

La expresión de esa simbiosis armoniosa, melodiosa, rítmica y corporal caribeña en la cultura local, ha tomado fuerza y en la actualidad ya hace parte de los imaginarios colectivos de muchos estadounidenses. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Carolina del Sur y Carolina del Norte, sólo por mencionar algunos estados del sur histórico, poseen hoy una identidad diversa y multicultural con muchos componentes afroamericanos, latinos e hispanos, aun teniendo presentes rezagos de la oposición a la abolición de la esclavitud. Nada más basta con hacer un breve paneo sobre los festivales culturales, de música, arte y de eventos deportivos en esta zona del país, para saber que la demanda aficionada y especializada tiene una robusta oferta de respuesta.

En el caso de Carolina del Norte, entre Raleigh, Wilmington y Charlotte, se reparten una decena de eventos que incluyen el Festival In The Park, el Festival del Día de San Patricio, el Festival Latinoamericano, el Festival Internacional de la Diversidad Cultural en Raleigh, entre otros. El baile también es una actividad practicada, y aunque tradicionalmente la población de Charlotte se inclina por el aprendizaje de danzas y bailes clásicos como el Ballet y el Vals, en la actualidad hay academias y escuelas de baile que incluyen dentro de los bailes de salón ritmos como Salsa On1, Cha Cha Chá, Rumba y Mambo, para aficionados y competencias.
